I have read this book easily more than one thousand times. I’ve only recited the Catholic Mass more often.

Here, let me cite the counterfactuals on Hitler and the Nazi movement that practically write themselves:

• What if Hitler just froze things after taking France in 1940 and made no effort on the UK, except offering peace?

• What if Hitler never took on Russia?

• What if he hadn’t declared war on the US?

• What if he hadn’t fixated on the “Jewish question” and its perceived connections to Marxism?

In general, what could Hitler have gotten away with (the ultimate counterfactual) if he hadn’t had these hatred blindspots that informed all of his strategic choices?

• Jews — the ultimate enemy, causing all of Germany's problems and constituting a threat to Aryan racial purity

• Communists — a Jewish conspiracy

• Slavic peoples — considered inferior and destined to be dominated by the "superior" Aryan race

• People with disabilities — harmful to the "purity" of the German people

• LGBTQ people — ditto

• Non-white peoples — ditto

• Modern artists — ditto

• Marxism in general — because it promoted racial equality and egalitarianism

• "Jewish Physics" — versus wholesome "Deutsche Physik,” which opposed modern theoretical physics, particularly Einstein's theories of relativity.

That last one was cited by Oppenheimer as America’s great advantage over the Germans in the race to create the bomb.

Hitler called quantum physics 'Jewish science'. Said it right to Einstein’s face. Our one hope is that Hitler’s so blinded by hate he’s denied Heisenberg proper resources. Because it’ll take vast resources. Our nation’s best scientists, working together- right now they’re scattered.

We’re living in a world of unprecedented change:

• Our planet’s environment being redefined, moved around (in terms of climate) and setting in motion what will be the biggest mass migration in human history (not to mention all those species similarly put on the move)

• Demographic collapse in the advanced North coupled with still-high fertility in the South

• A global majority middle class with all its desires for consumption and standard of living coming into play

• The onset of the technological singularity just in time to deal with all this structural change and the challenges they present.

So no, we can’t win if we demonize science and scientists, or seek to eliminate unpopular sub-populations by defining them out of existence. We can sideline ourselves alright, but there ain’t no such thing as a global movement of Right-wing nationalists because — by definition — they cannot get along since the rest are inherently inferior.

In short, we can’t hate our way back to the top of the global heap — it’s just not possible. The demographics, both inside America and across the world simply do not support it, because they generate too few haters within “our” White Christian Nationalist ranks and too many for us to collectively hate.

Hitler sought to flood the zone and was enormously successful right up until his hatreds cumulatively forced him to invade the Soviet Union. He just had to double-down — the most celebrated of instincts today and the most inevitable source of Trump 2.0’s ultimate failure.

At least it’s not promising a thousand-year reign, which would only be marginally more nutty.

Why?

Again, the demographics do not favor any such domination: where roughly one-fifth of the public serve as the intransigent minority, the only way to stay in power is to pervasively institutionalize state repression of all the other groups who do not buy into those racial and religious and gender definitions of superiority. That kind of apartheid system in the US is not feasible because it will ultimately elicit the violent opposition of that today-poorly-organized majority, who are just as “American” in their instincts to revolt as are that intransigent minority.

An intransigent minority refers to a small group within a population that holds firm and uncompromising views, which can disproportionately influence the majority. This concept, popularized by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, suggests that a determined minority can often prevail over a more flexible majority.
