NTD: Analyst: Trump Admin Uses Tariffs to Shape Global Policy, Uses Panama Canal as Negotiating Tactic
Thomas Barnett, author of the book “America’s New Map” and senior business strategist at Throughline Inc., told NTD’s Jack Bradley about the diplomatic impacts of the Trump administration’s use of tariffs to shape global policy. This comes as the White House says Colombia will accept all illegal immigrants being deported by the United States after President Donald Trump threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on the country. Barnett also dives into the strategic importance of the Panama Canal, and explains why he thinks Trump’s rhetoric on taking back control of the canal is a negotiating tactic.
Taped this yesterday afternoon and it ran last night on the NTD evening news program called the Capitol Report with sub host Jack Bradley.
One mistake on my part: it’s southern Panama that connects to South America and not northern Panama, as I stated. Blame it on my visual memory from earlier in the afternoon when I looked at a southward-facing map of the region so that Panama’s southern section was on top. I accessed my memory right in that moment and thought up is north!
One bit they did not use, to my dismay: in response to a question about China’s “control” of the Panama Canal, I offered the analogy of a company hired to operate two parking garages next door to Wrigley Field in Chicago (equivalent to those two holding-pen ports that a HK firm manages on each side of the canal): in truth, not much operational influence in that service provision. I could tell NTD wanted a stronger statement based on their past reporting and guests, but I just wasn’t going to provide one.
Always to remember: they can only use what you give them.
My thanks to the PR Firm that set it up: Elkordy Global Strategies.
