The reality is that borders are often very artificial constructs imposed upon very mixed environments. It is not at all hard to locate all manner of “trapped populations” yearning to be “free” of their current rulers (especially in areas colonized by outsiders in the past, like Africa). Conversely, it is not hard to find ambitious nationalist leaders eager to play that political card, seeing in such irredentism the “preservation” of their tribe.
