The right way to view globalization's current evolution
A great Financial Times column much in line with "America's New Map"
Like everybody who writes, I want to put down unique stuff, and yet, as someone who aspires to craft grand-strategy principles, your vision must be readily recognizable — as in, the best compliment you can get is, “I’ve been making the same argument for years now!”
In short, you want to attract new adherents while triangulating with fellow travelers. You want to be out-there but still locatable on larger cognitive maps.
So, when I see a column like this one in the Financial Times, it makes me feel good about my overall message — that I’m not the only one viewing macro-trends in this (what I consider to be) balanced manner full of broad-framing analysis.
The author is Larry Elliott and the column is entitled Globalisation is not dead, but it is fading: ‘glocalisation’ is becoming the new mantra. It is worth plundering for the record, even as I have my criticisms.
