Professor Barnett, I’m a subscriber and long time fan.
Your strategic analysis of social and economic developments are a comfortable port in a crazy storm.
I’m curious to know your perspective on race as a strategic lever for political leaders. Or, and this is my slightly Marxist world view, oligarchy.
I’ll come clean here, “race” is a category of the mind, not a metaphysical reality. Further, “white” came into the English language during The Bacon Rebellion.
The Virginia Planters(oligarchs) could NOT abide the African “workers” making common cause with the Irish “workers” thus divided them between “white” and “black”.
And here we are so many years later still playing this bitch game of “race” like good little slaves. Divided. Conquered.
Not humans and not souls. I’m going to advocate for The Church here, maybe we humans can see and treat each other as God’s children instead of manipulated economic tools.
I see a profound Irish and Catholic decency in your writings and would like your take on my take.
It is true that White v Black is mostly an American obsession that has subsequently expanded to White v People of Color. It is the worst thing we've ever bequeathed the world.
It's that level of understanding that makes the 1619 Project so profound -- and scary to some.
Is religion a solution? It has been for me, but even there we find a division between those who await the great correction (pre-millennialism) and those who believe we build heaven on earth and that is the correction (post-millennialism).
The former tend to need a villain in the here and now, the latter do not -- by my way of reasoning.
It's the need for the scapegoat that is still a problem here.

Cheers to you and your family,
